2024 was a treasure trove of new tech and innovation in the realm of outdoor advertising. In this post, we’ll focus on digital signage campaigns that caught our eye this year, and we felt you might want to see. While this post will focus on examples from this year, we also have a post on the best outdoor campaigns as well as the most impactful digital signage trends in the past decade.

1. A store covered in LEDs!

In a world dominated by displays, Future Stores, an immersive pop-up retail venue, tries to stand out. And might we say with quite a bit of success! The space is entirely covered with fine-pitch LED displays. Each pop-up store operates only for a limited time. The first brand to rent the space was Intel. They utilized AI to make the experience even more immersive. Take a look!

2. Kinetic LED signage in public spaces

A newer concept, kinetic digital signage has the ability to change its size and shape, offering new opportunities for visual displays. As a great example, take a look at LG’s kinetic signage in a museum environment in South Korea.

Kinetic signage emerges as an exciting method of storytelling. We have primarily seen it used for artistic exhibits, transforming museums, galleries, and even lobbies into something more.

3. Near-transparent LED waterfall

This particular example was already featured in one of our monthly digital signage news and it’s certainly worth mentioning again. The animated waterfall visual is a simple and effective way to use transparent displays to transform a space and bring excitement to visitors. This particular example comes from the exhibition hall in Lingqu Park, China.

We discovered this article, alongside a few others, through Sixteen:Nine. Check out the blog for more exciting examples of digital signage campaigns. You’ll run across flashy setups but also simpler and more data-driven examples.

4. DOOH ads based on real-time data

Speaking of data-driven digital signage campaigns, FREENOW, dubbed as “Europe’s best multi mobility app,” tapped into information from multiple sources to boost brand awareness and ride bookings. For example, content would trigger based on conditions in public transportation. If available data reported delays or congestion of London Underground lines, digital displays would start promoting FREENOW as an alternative.

Furthermore, utilizing the power of programmatic digital signage, they were able to target audiences and perform real-time adjustments. Ads targeted specific demographics and locations. In short, FREENOW used digital signage as a responsive, real-time advertising channel. Certainly not the most glamorous campaign of the bunch, but definitely a masterclass in utilizing data and tools from different areas to achieve success!

5. AI-powered digital billboards

AI doesn’t always have to scream that it’s AI. It doesn’t need to do overly elaborate calculations or make unique images at the given moment to be impressive. Instead, it can simply deliver data when it’s needed, based on set criteria. A shopping center in Poland branded such an example as an AI Screen, at Galeria Katowicka. The enormous screen at the entrance shows real-time data based on temperature, traffic, and even air quality.

The technology uses sensors to trigger content. Keep in mind that this is not an uncommon feature in digital signage software. For example, you can link sensors to your software or use publicly available weather data and set up triggers based on certain criteria. With OnSign TV, for example, you can use specific input to trigger content, including temperature!

6. The potential of 3D digital signage

Each year, we see more examples of 3D digital signage campaigns. In fact, we wrote all about it earlier this year. They’re primarily reserved for flashy campaigns intended to build hype and anticipation. For example, a really fun campaign emerged this Halloween at the Puerto Venecia shopping resort in Spain.

Meanwhile, 3D digital signage can also help build excitement about a product and engage the viewer. Take a look at this 3D illusion from a dealership conference.

7. A giant butterfly with LED wings

This next example will offer absolutely no direct use for you or your business, but we thought it would still be fun to see the possibilities of LED technology to build something extraordinary. And also because it’s a lovely sight.

Then again, if you ever needed a giant butterfly composed of 39,000 LEDs, this might just be your thing!

8. Samsung’s ISE 2024 highlight

If you want to see a highly concentrated amount of digital signage use cases and examples, Integrated Systems Europe is the place to be. This year, Samsung compiled a quick-paced video featuring several examples for the use of their digital displays. Examples included retail, education, and decorations! Take a look.

Speaking of the event, ISE 2025 is just around the corner. OnSign TV will be there, so this is your early invite and reminder to stop by our booth (4E170) and ask a question, request a quick demo of our platform, or just say hi. See you there!
